A small correction, for the benefit of the listeners:
During the AK-47 part,
you make a passing mention of the MP 44 as an
inspiration. This is an often-made error, most likely
due to the slight physical resemblence between the two
weapons.
The first true assault gun was Russian in the first
place, the AF-16, which saw some action during World
War I (and thus far preceeded the MP 44).
The AK-47 itself was designed by Kalashnikov, as you
know, but there is no evidence that he saw the MP 44
until long after the AK-47 had been designed (and he
himself has stated that he didn't know of the MP 44
until long after the AK-47 had entered production).
The internal design of the AK-47 is also widely
different from that of the MP 44.

That is also my understanding, that the ak47 was not modeled from mp 44. My souce is a memory of Mail Call and he, gunny, makes it clear that ak47 and mp44 are not of the same characteristics or modeled from mp44.
