Defense of the Pacific Northwest

Listen to "Defense of the Pacific Northwest"

The Pacific Northwest has many military facilities. Washington State, specifically, has:
  • Naval Base Kitsap: Holds nuclear submarines, a carrier battle group, and a navy region command center
  • Naval Station Everett: Holds a carrier battle group
  • McChord Air Force Base: Holds a Western Air Defense Sector command center
  • Fairchild Air Force Base: Holds nuclear transport aircraft
  • Fort Lewis: Holds the I Corps command center and stryker brigades
  • Hanford Site: Held plutonium production facilities and is now the site of the largest cleanup project in the country

Very good pod cast. In addition to the military bases listed for Washington State there is also Navel Air Station Whidbey Island http://naswi.ahf.nmci.navy.mil/index.htm. This base currently is home to P-3 Orions, and will be getting a few squadrons of F-18 Growlers. It also has EA-6B Prowler Electronic warfare aircraft.

Hi there. I knew you were a young'un, but a high school junior?

wow.

Your podcasts have a professional polish and depth of content that defy your years....

And a comment on the Pacific NW podcast. I'd love to see you do a regional podcast about the Northeast, and how it's been systematically stripped of all of its bases and defenses during the last few years. The Mass 102nd ANG Wing, the guys that defended the airspace on 9/11, no longer exist, and I think quite a few people have no idea that the whole Northeast corridor is virtually undefended. The nearest airbase with actual fighter jets is Andrews AFB, over 400 miles away.

I have been a big fan of your podcast, but in the recent episode

"Defense of the Pacific Northwest" I was surprised that you did not
mention the Survival School at Fairchild AFB. This is one of the few
survival schools that the US runs. It even has a mock POW camp.

Here is a website with more info on the SERE carrier field in the USAF.

Here is a link to some pictures too

Also a little info from wikipedia:

The "Resistance and Escape" component of SERE focuses on resistance and
survival in captivity based on experiences of formerly captured
Americans at the hands of the enemy. The majority of this portion of the
course is classified Secret by the United States government. However
several official sites exist to give a general overview of the
curricula. The goal of this portion is training the student to survive
captivity. The training has been widely reported to provide a realistic
simulation of harsh and abusive coercive techniques and to teach the
students how to resist them. The SERE students are not taught how to
apply coercive techniques or interrogate enemy prisoners of war and, as
most are aircrews, would not normally be in duties even involving enemy
POW's.

The training has been widely reported to teach resistance to harsh and
abusive interrogation techniques including:

* extreme temperatures
* waterboarding http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waterboarding - being
tied to a board with the feet higher than the head and having
water poured into the nose
* noise stress - playing very loud and dissonant music and sound
effects. Recordings have been reported to include babies wailing
inconsolably, cats meowing, and irritating music (including a
record by Yoko Ono http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yoko_Ono
http://www.newyorker.com/printables/fact/050711fa_fact4
* sexual embarrassment
* religious dilemma - being given the choice of either seeing a
religious book desecrated or revealing secrets to interrogators.
* flag desecration http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_desecration
* prolonged cramped or restrictive confinement
* sleep deprivation http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep_deprivation
* starvation http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starvation
* mock execution http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mock_execution
* overcoming food aversion (finding nutrition from alternate sources
which might include insects, roadkill, dumpsters, and urine)
* height/water/enclosed spaces
* physical beating
* "stress inoculation http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stress_inoculation

Keep up the great work!
I had no idea you were not even in college . . . don't let it go to your
head ;-)
